Complementary Quotation
This process begins by meeting with all homeowners, and reviewing the flooring renovation project. During this visit, a Scholarly representative will do a thorough walk through of the home with you to determine what areas would benefit from a refinish or a screen finish, and which areas require a brand new installation.
We will explain the preparation and installation process that is required to ensure our 25 year manufacturer’s warranty will hold, and all the work required to ensure our refinishing project lasts for years to come. Whether you are looking to install laminate or hardwood products, refinish with a custom stain, or install brand new mouldings and trim throughout the home, a flooring representative will be able to answer all of your questions. A refinishing project will spruce up the floors and remove unsightly scratches, dents, and damaged areas of your current finish. Installing a new prefinished floor is a great way to modernize your home, and with the renewable selection of flooring on the market today, this can also be a green alternative in your renovations.
At the end of this meeting you will be provided with an accurate quotation explaining the proposed work, and the investment required for us to service your home. Meet with your Scholars flooring representative today, to discuss which flooring alternatives would be a good fit for you.
Hardwood Installation Process
Safety Check: The first action step completed in the flooring process is a safety review with all of the installers who are working on the site. In an effort to keep the work area tidy, a work area is established where all saw work will take place, and difficult areas of subfloor reparation, demolition, or installation are discussed to set up a project plan. As soon as all workers have reviewed the safety concerns on the jobsite, site preparation will commence.
Site preparation: A key element in the site preparation is to move and preserve all items in the living space. Furniture is removed and placed in adjacent rooms where work is not being completed to avoid dust and Varathane damage, or moved to a different level of the home for the entirety of the installation process. Furniture is then plastic wrapped to avoid dust accumulation during the project. All baseboards in the work area are removed and stored neatly and a site inspection is completed to review what caused problem areas. The floor is then checked for damages, i.e. gapping and buckling, to assess which areas of the subfloor require reparation.
Remove Existing Flooring: Hardwood is removed by sawing a line down the centre of the floor and prying up older boards. During this step, extra care is taken to ensure the subfloor is not damaged during this process. Ceramics are removed carefully by breaking older tiles and disposing of them, than using the appropriate tools to scrape and clean the subfloor prior to installation. Carpets and laminates are removed as well as their undermattings, enabling an inspection of the subfloor to be completed. Care is taken during this process to dispose of waste on an ongoing basis, to keep the workspace and the rest of your home clean and liveable.
Subfloor Reparation: As with most construction contracts, a clean jobsite environment is paramount to the successful completion of the project. After an inspection of the subfloor has been completed, the subfloor is then screwed down to prevent squeaking and cracking in the future. We will rescrew the subfloor on every joist every 12-16 inches to ensure our finish product will be beautiful and noise free. Any areas of damaged or rotting subfloor will be cut out and replaced with new ¾” plywood sheeting. Finally a vapour barrier or paper under matting is installed to prevent moisture from penetrating the newly installed project. Each step of this preparation process is carefully executed as per our proposal, with special attention granted to the subfloor reparation and preparation.
Pre Installation Clean Up: A clean job site is an efficient job site, and that is why we take time to clean up our jobsite after every step of the installation process. Furthermore, we understand that this process can be stressful for homeowners, so we make every effort to minimize displacement and mess. As soon as the previous floor is removed, all planks will be disposed of and the site will receive a thorough vacuuming. Any chips left behind prior to installation could cause an even finish, and this is why we place an extra focus and maintaining a clean jobsite throughout the project.
Installation: The most important part of a successful installation is found within the first lanes laid. Using the proper square tools and measuring techniques, the first line is laid ¼” away from the wall by drilling nail holes into the edges of the boards, and hand nailing the first line. This ¼” will continue around the rest of the perimeter to prevent buckling in the future as the Hardwood expands and contracts. Our product knowledge allows us to ensure that each contract is executed properly. The next 2 lines of hardwood are laid and nailed with a pneumatic hand nailer, with a focus on attention to detail to ensure there are no off-angle pieces installed. Once the first few lanes are established, the remainder of the floor is cut and nailed with a Bostitch Cleat nailer using 2” cleats to fasten the floor. A skilled design eye is used while lighter and darker shades of wood are spaced appropriately to create a marbling pattern. Finally the last lanes are again installed with a finishing nailer, and the final lane drilled and hand nailed to finish the installation. Baseboards and ¼ rounds are then installed to complete the project, and now the home is ready for a painting renovation.
Final Clean Up: With the hardwood laid and installed, a final clean up is done, and all equipment is removed from the jobsite. Your floor will be wiped down with the appropriate cleaning product prior to replacing all furniture, in a continued effort to keep your home (and our jobsite) as neat as possible. Our workers will take care not to damage or scuff the newly installed floor by wearing boot coverings as we replace all furniture. Following the replacement of the furniture, we execute a final sweep up, and you are ready to enjoy your newly installed hardwood floor for years to come. .
